Artist's Comments

Haven't updated in a little while, so I'll show you a little of what I've been working on on the side lately. My friends in Drama Tech are about to finish auditions for their winter show "Into the Woods" and I've been playing with doing a poster for them. These are some of the sketches of characters from the play that I've been working on. Rapunzel, the brother Prince Charmings, Big Bad Wolf, Red Riding Hood, the Witch, the Man in the Woods, and Cinderella so far. Working on Jack, Milky White, the Baker and his Wife. Once they're all done, I'll do a group scene with them, paint 'em up photoshop style, do a few takes on the title and layout the poster. Wheee! Feel free to comment, crit, discuss and all that.

I have to say I love your work so much. As I look at this I can just SEE the characters moving around, talking, and singing. You have such a high caliber of art that it so much fun to look at. They just come to life off the page! Well done.

Fairy Tales revisited.

Yep! Into the Woods is basically a very long, overblown, fractured fairy tale. The first act basically interweaves several famous stories and ends them the way they end in Grimm's (more or less), but the second act makes them deal with some of the consequences of their actions and find out more of who they are. It's a lot about relationships, family, responsibility, morality and all that jazz. Mostly I'm trying to give it nostalgia for animated feature fairy tales, but slightly skewed. But yeah, mostly it's an excuse to do my own take on familiar institutions.

I really like your Cinderella with glasses. Your characters are nicely simplified, and I'd really like to see them animated. Your lines are so pure!!! I do prefer your female characters though, the male ones are maybe a bit conventionnal (the M. Muscles I'm-a-superhero- kinda design).

I love how Cinderella looks! Great flowing lines and awesome style. And that wolf kickass!

Interesting... particularly since I don't tend to draw female characters all that often. As far as the princes being conventional, Mr. Muscle, bland hero types, that's what I was going for with them, and it's how I took it that they're portrayed in the play. All appearances, the personality trained out of them until they're just vacant smiles and showy physiques with no real respect for beauty after it's been won. I do like to think that the Old Man character has a bit of life to him though, and the stuff I'm working on with the baker and Jack definitely have more personality than the two princes (but they're not done and don't appear here, so you just have to take my word on it I suppose).

Cindy's kind of based on the classic teen movie falacy that you make the "plain" girl beautiful by letting down her hair and taking off her glasses. Me, I've always prefered them with the hair in a ponytail and the glasses on, but hey, what can you do?
