Well, this guy's been an illusive character for me to figure out just right. I went through a lot of failed drawings before I finally hit on something that I think works well for the male lead of the Princess Bride, and here he is as Wesley the Farm Boy (who, the book says, wore blue jeans because they were around long before people think... yeah) and Wesley the Man in Black, AKA the Dread Pirate Roberts ('cause no one would surrender to the Dread Pirate Wesley). Sadly, as tough as Wes has been to figure out to my satisfaction, Buttercup's been even more of a challenge, so she's the next battle I'm fighting. Eh, well just enjoy Wesley for the time being.
Pretty good. Kinda Dreamworksy, but a bit more fluid. Watch your perspective: a foot that's closer to us should be larger than appearance than one farther from us. Also, in the beefcake topless shot, his right arm is considerably longer than his left arm.
I can see how Wesley could be hard.. I always imagined him as more of a skinny sort of fellow instead of a meat-muffin... (is that correct terminology?) It's always the characters that are the least interesting that are the hardest to develop. Now... Fezzik or Prince Humperdink, you got yourself pie, my friend.. pie.
Yeah, Wes and Buttercup are tough mostly because they're defining characteristic is physical beauty, and that doesn't lend itself as easily to caricature as descriptions like "a blade-thin Spaniard" or "a mustachioed Turkish giant whose name means Arms".
But yeah, in the book, Buttercup's trying to figure out why the Dutchess is taking an interest in him, and goes through things like who wouldn't be tanned and muscled when they work hard in the sun all day kind of things. Basically, that first chapter makes Wesley into a kind of romance novel stereotype as far as physical appearance goes. Even a bit of a muscular powerhouse, when he's described coming out of the shadows to thrash the village boys that get out of hand around Buttercup.
And I guess that if there are "beefcakes", then sure there can surely be "meat-muffins". Hopefully found in your grocer's freezer, 'cause I figure a meat-muffin would go bad pretty quick if it was just on a shelf in the bakery section.
Yeah, I get the "Dreamworks" comment from time to time. I did think that Wes as the Man in Black was getting a bit Sinbad-ish with the goatee, but clean-shaven was a bit boring to me, and the Rhett Butler thing in the live action TPB movie just wasn't enough, so I said "screw it" and did the piratical goatee. Oh, and I also did a quick edit and repaired the arm size a bit on Farm Boy and shrank the back foot of the Man in Black some to push that perspective a bit.
I'm a big fan of instant gratification, so I thank you for that.
Studly's arm looks better, but on the other pose, even with a smaller foot on the other leg, the outstretched leg seems a bit short for an outstretched leg. If you agree and intend to change that, I wouldn't recommend changing it right now. Let that gestate. Sleep on it. A lot of times, several hours of distance is all a drawing needs. Kinda like that math problem you couldn't figure out all night in the 8th grade that suddenly came to you in the morning.
Across the globe, 27 million men, women, and children live in some form of slavery. That is more people at this moment than in all the centuries of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Something must be done. This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
